Multidrug-resistant (CRAB) infections are a serious problem in critical care. This study aims to develop an early prognostic score for immune paralysis, using practical and cost-effective parameters, to predict ICU mortality in patients with CRAB infections being treated with Cefiderocol. We carried out an observational pilot study on consecutive patients hospitalized in the ICU with ensuing septic infections treated with Cefiderocol monotherapy or Cefiderocol including combinations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the increasing rates of nontraumatic spinal cord injuries (SCI) and how their causes affect patient outcomes, particularly with aging populations.
  • It analyzes a group of 1,080 patients, focusing on both traumatic and nontraumatic SCI, and uses various assessment tools to compare rehabilitation results and influencing factors.
  • Results indicate notable differences between the two injury types, yet both showed similar improvements in neurological and functional status after rehabilitation, with some advantages seen in traumatic injury patients.

Background: Perinatal hypoxia triggers the release of cytokines and chemokines by neurons, astrocytes and microglia. In response to hypoxia-ischemia resting/ramified microglia proliferate and undergo activation, producing proinflammatory molecules. The brain damage extension seems to be related to both the severity of hypoxia and the balance between pro and anti-inflammatory response and can be explored with neuroimaging.

Objectives: In Italy, the case fatality rate (CFR) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during the first wave of the pandemic showed significant geographic heterogeneity. The aim of this study was to explore the possible association between the CFR and measures of disease burden in the Italian regions using an ecological approach.

Methods: Cumulated regional data for the period February 24 to May 11, 2020 were analysed to assess the association of the CFR with the cumulative incidence of COVID-19 and the ratio between the maximum number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units (ICU) and ICU beds available before the pandemic (ICU load), adjusting for median age of the patients at disease onset, number of nasopharyngeal swabs performed per confirmed case, and prevalence of chronic diseases .

Background: We aimed to describe the change in the incidence and causes of hospitalization between 2008 and 2018 among persons living with HIV (PLWHIV) who started antiretroviral therapy (ART) from 2008 onwards in Italy.

Methods: We included participants in the ICONA (Italian Cohort Naïve Antiretrovirals) cohort who started ART in 2008. All the hospitalizations occurring during the first 30 days from the start of ART were excluded.
