AbstractGeneration time is a measure of the pace of life and is used to describe processes in population dynamics and evolution. We show that three commonly used mathematical definitions of generation time in age-structured populations can produce different estimates of up to several years for the same set of life history data. We present and prove a mathematical theorem that reveals a general order relation among the definitions.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is the leading cause of acute liver failure and a major concern in drug development. Altered bile acid homeostasis via inhibition of the bile salt export pump (BSEP) is one mechanism of DILI. Dasatinib, pazopanib, and sorafenib are tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) that competitively inhibit BSEP and increase serum biomarkers for hepatotoxicity in ∼25-50% of patients.

Local biodiversity trends over time are likely to be decoupled from global trends, as local processes may compensate or counteract global change. We analyze 161 long-term biological time series (15-91 years) collected across Europe, using a comprehensive dataset comprising ~6,200 marine, freshwater and terrestrial taxa. We test whether (i) local long-term biodiversity trends are consistent among biogeoregions, realms and taxonomic groups, and (ii) changes in biodiversity correlate with regional climate and local conditions.

Sweden is investigating an outbreak of monophasic Typhimurium. Eighty-two nationally-distributed cases have been confirmed, with date of symptom onset between 28 August and 29 October. Cases were 51 years of age on average (range: 0-89) and the majority of cases were female (62%).
