Article Synopsis
  • Eighteen mild hypertensive patients and 15 normotensive controls were assessed for insulin sensitivity using insulin tolerance tests and fasting plasma insulin level measurements.
  • Insulin sensitivity strongly correlated with body mass index (BMI) in both groups, indicating that higher BMI is linked to lower insulin sensitivity.
  • Nonobese hypertensive patients showed similar insulin sensitivity to nonobese normotensive controls, but obese normotensive subjects had higher fasting plasma insulin levels than their hypertensive counterparts.
