The objective was to assess the degree of disease control and to evaluate the protective efficacy of licensed Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccines (HbOC, PRP-OMP, PRP-D) used routinely in children 2 to 35 months of age. We conducted a case-control study in Los Angeles County between January 1, 1991, and December 31, 1992, and a cohort analysis of Hib cases between 1983 and 1992. For the case-control study 105 cases of invasive Hib disease were identified and 767 geographically and age-matched controls were selected by random digit telephone dialing.
