Exploring factors influencing alcohol consumption patterns among Chinese and Caucasians.

Past research on alcohol consumption patterns comparing Chinese and Caucasians indicates that significant group differences exist. Chinese, as a group, consume significantly less alcohol than their Caucasian counterparts. Explanations for these differences have been controversial.

Effects of age and severity of illness on outcome and length of stay in geriatric surgical patients.

From April 1, 1990, to March 31, 1992, 8,899 patients who were 65 years of age and older underwent an anesthetic and surgical procedure in a 1,000-bed community hospital in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. The hospital has been using a proprietary system called MedisGroups for assessing the severity of illness on admission and in-hospital morbidity. All patients were followed up until death or discharge from the hospital.

Stripping out pus in lactational mastitis: a means of preventing breast abscess.

Objective: To determine whether manual stripping of pus from the breasts of women with lactational mastitis is effective in preventing the formation of breast abscesses.

Methodological considerations in the use of attribute variables in neuropsychological research.

This paper examines the conceptual and statistical difficulties created when neuropsychological research uses attribute variables in traditional orthogonal experimental designs. It is argued that attribute variables, as a result of their statistical and theoretical nonindependence, break the underlying assumptions of these traditional designs, and may lead to incorrect inferences being drawn. These difficulties are illustrated in a consideration of the typical use of analysis of variance designs, matched groups designs, and the analysis of covariance.
