Background: The aim of this retrospective study was the elaboration of a new diagnostic model that integrate cytological reports (2017 Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology) with ultrasonographic features (based on ACR TI-RADS score) to achieve a more accurate definition of indeterminate thyroid nodule malignancy risk.

Methods: Ninety patients submitted to thyroidectomy were divided in three classes: low malignancy risk (AUS/FLUS with TI-RADS 2/TI-RADS 3 and FN/SFN with TI-RADS 2), intermediate malignancy risk (AUS/FLUS with TI-RADS 4/TI-RADS 5 and FN/SFN with TI-RADS 3/TI-RADS 4), and high malignancy risk (FN/SFN with TI-RADS 5).

In this work we investigated the role of fluid in the initial phase of bacterial adhesion on textured surfaces, focusing onto the approach of the bacterial cells towards the surface. In particular, stainless steel surfaces textured via femtosecond laser interaction have been considered. The method combined a simulation routine, based on the numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations, and the use of a theoretical model, based on the Smoluchowski's equation.

An original model has been developed for the initial stage of bacterial adhesion on textured surfaces. Based on molecular dynamics, the model describes contact between individual bacterial cells in a planktonic state and a surface, accounting for both the mechanical properties of the cells and the physico-chemical mechanisms governing interaction with the substrate. Feasibility of the model is assessed via comparison with experimental results of bacterial growth on stainless steel substrates textured with ultrashort laser pulses.

Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial retention on mirror-polished and ultrashort pulse laser-textured surfaces is quantified with a new approach based on ISO standards for measurement of antibacterial performance. It is shown that both wettability and surface morphology influence antibacterial behavior, with neither superhydrophobicity nor low surface roughness alone sufficient for reducing initial retention of either tested cell type.
