Current management for diabetes has stimulated the development of versatile 3D-based hydrogels as in vitro platforms for insulin release and as support for the encapsulation of pancreatic cells and islets of Langerhans. This work aimed to create agarose/fucoidan hydrogels to encapsulate pancreatic cells as a potential biomaterial for diabetes therapeutics. The hydrogels were produced by combining fucoidan (Fu) and agarose (Aga), marine polysaccharides derived from the cell wall of brown and red seaweeds, respectively, and a thermal gelation process.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed data from over 500 patients across multiple neurosurgery centers to identify risk factors for ONP, finding that larger aneurysms (≥7.5 mm) and smoking significantly increased the likelihood of developing ONP.
  • * Results indicated that 80.7% of patients experienced some improvement in ONP after surgical treatment, with a median recovery time of 90 days, suggesting positive outcomes for those treated.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a need for better diabetes therapies due to the inefficiency of current treatments, which struggle to manage blood glucose levels effectively.
  • This research explores the use of fucoidan, a marine polysaccharide, to create drug carriers that can help deliver insulin and maintain the health of insulin-producing cells.
  • The study shows that methacrylated fucoidan can release insulin in a controlled manner and support the growth of pancreatic beta cells, suggesting its potential as a promising treatment option for diabetes.
