Background: We reviewed Nissen fundoplications performed in a single practice from January 1989 to March 1997, encompassing our transition from open to laparoscopic procedures. Because all operations were done by two surgeons in the same two hospitals, the study is well controlled for comparisons.
Methods: Records of 271 consecutive patients were reviewed.
Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) on skin flap viability.
Background: Dimethylsulfoxide has been shown to decrease necrosis of random skin flaps in the rat model, but no human studies have been performed. The authors performed a randomized, prospective study on the effect of DMSO on skin flap viability in patients undergoing mastectomy and inguinal lymphadenectomy.
Study of normal colonic function is important in understanding the cellular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and other diseases of the colon. However, colonic pathophysiological studies have been limited due to the lack of long-term cultures of normal human colonic epithelial cells. The purpose of the present study was to develop methods of isolating viable human colonic epithelial cells for the establishment of nontransformed colonic epithelial cell lines.
