Mapping neonatal hearing screening services in Cape Town metro: A situational analysis.

Background:  Childhood hearing loss is a global health concern. Despite the proven benefits of neonatal hearing screening (NHS), it is not yet mandated in South Africa. The lack of awareness of hearing loss and absence of NHS leads to delayed diagnosis and adverse developmental outcomes for affected children.

Design: A feasibility study design was used. Trained screeners conducted smartphone-based pure tone audiometry screening at 25 dB HL, at 1, 2, and 4 kHz using calibrated headphones.

Background: Hearing loss is a neurological sequelae associated with sickle cell disease (SCD) and probably sickle cell trait (SCT) in children and adults but remains understudied.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the hearing impairment among children and adults living with SCD or SCT.
