Gallbladder spillage during laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedures is common but rarely leads to patient morbidity due to complications such as abscesses or fistulas. We present the case of a 52-year-old woman post cholecystectomy, who presented to our dermatology clinic with abdominal pain and an epigastric subcutaneous nodule. The nodule was removed, leading to a complete resolution of her pain.

Introduction: Active surveillance (AS) has emerged as a primary management strategy for low-risk prostate cancer (PC) patients. We aimed to assess AS uptake over a 1-year snapshot throughout Quebec and to compare it to 2010 multicentric Canadian data.

Methods: A retrospective chart review and data collection was performed in 1 academic and 2 non-academic community centres from Quebec, among men identified in 2016 with localized T1c-T2c PC on biopsy, fulfilling NCCN criteria of low-risk (LR)-PC, including very-low-risk (VLR) and non-VLR-PC, and favourable-intermediate risk (FIR)-PC.

Microfluidic bioanalytical platforms are driving discoveries from synthetic biology to the health sciences. In this work, we present a platform for live-cell imaging and automated species detection in mixed cyanobacterial biofilms from cold climate environments. Using a multimodal microscope with custom optics applied to a chip with six parallel growth channels, we monitored biofilm dynamics via continuous imaging at natural irradiance levels.

An advanced understanding of optical design is necessary to create optimal systems but this is rarely taught as part of general curriculum. Compounded by the fact that professional optical design software tools have a prohibitive learning curve, this means that neither knowledge nor tools are easily accessible. In this tutorial, we introduce a raytracing module for Python, originally developed for teaching optics with ray matrices, to simplify the design and optimization of optical systems.
