Colon mucosal cells after high-dose fractional irradiation.

The aim of this study was to investigate histological and stereological changes in cryptal enterocytes, mucosal lymphocytes and mast cells 10 days after irradiation. For experimental model, 24 Beagle dogs 1-2 years old were used. Twelve dogs were irradiated 20 days with 32 Gy over the whole pelvis and tail.

Solid papillary-cystic tumor of the pancreas.

Background/aims: Clinical diagnosis and histopathological findings of a solid papillary-cystic tumor (SCT) of the pancreas may be unrecognized due to difficult differentiation between exocrine and endocrine pancreatic neoplasms, such as acinar cell carcinoma. Surgeons should be aware of this benign but rather uncommon lesion because complete excision is possible and successful.

Methodology: The clinical course, surgical treatment and morphological findings of 3 patients with SCT are analyzed.

[Pancreatic pleural effusion. Diagnosis and therapy].

Pancreaticopleural fistula is an uncommon complication of chronic pancreatitis or pancreatic trauma. Clinical features include pleural effusion and resulting pulmonary symptoms. Abdominal pain and other clinical manifestations of pancreatitis may be minimal or absent.

[Surgical treatment of echinococcal hepatic cysts with pericystectomy].

The authors present their 2-year experience in treating echinococcus cysts of the liver by pericystectomy and the Cavitron ultrasonic vibrator-aspirator. The treatment consists of total pericystectomy involving no opening of the cyst. Patients treated at the University Department of Gastroenterologic Surgery, Ljubljana, are presented.

[Rare causes of hemorrhage from the digestive tract].

Some rare causes of intestinal bleeding, where diagnosing is difficult, have been shown. Cases of Meckel's diverticulum, leiomyoma and angiomas have been reported. The considerable help which can be expected from modern diagnostic procedures has been stressed, from screening using 99 m Tc Pertechnetate in diagnosing the Meckel's diverticulum and from selective angiography in diagnosing the other pathologic changes, mainly arteriovenous malformations.
