Isolated renal metastasis after colon cancer.

Renal infiltration of colon adenocarcinoma is a rare event. The authors present the case report of a 52-year-old female who had a high carcinoembryonic antigen level 18 months after right hemicolectomy and a chemotherapy regimen to treat transverse colon adenocarcinoma. The patient presented cancer recurrence after 12 months, and underwent a paraaortic lymphadenoctomy and a second adjuvant chemotherapy with the folfox regimen.

Efficiency of short and long term antimicrobial therapy in transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies.

Objective: Prostate biopsy is a frequent diagnostic measure to detect prostatic conditions, including primarily prostate cancer. Its performance does not follow a pattern, mainly regarding preparation for the examination through antimicrobial prophylaxis. The aim of this study is to compare the efficiency of short and long term antimicrobial prophylaxis in transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies.

Infective complications according to duration of antibiotic treatment in acute abdomen.

Introduction: Adjuvant antibiotic therapy for acute abdominal conditions is widely used. Its timing, duration, dose and spectrum, however, are not homogeneous amongst surgeons and prolonged courses are often used despite the unproven benefits of this practice.

Objective: To evaluate use and compare duration of antibiotic treatments in acute abdominal surgery.

The effects of allopurinol in hepatic ischemia and reperfusion: experimental study in rats.

Background/aims: Some studies have shown that postischemic hepatic dysfunction is mainly due to oxygen free radicals that are generated by xanthine oxidase. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, on oxidative stress, liver injury and histologic alterations induced by hepatic ischemia-reperfusion in rats.

Methods: One hundred and sixty Wistar rats were used and divided into three groups.

[Protective effect of colchicine on tissue damage caused by free radicals in hepatic cirrhosis: an experimental study in rats].

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of colchicine on oxidative stress in cirrhosis assessed by lipid peroxidation products. Wistar rats were used and induced hepatic cirrhosis by carbon tetrachloride. After the cirrhosis-induced period colchicine was administrated daily during 90 days.
