Deceased donor kidney transplanted in childhood functioning well after 52 years.

Background: Kidney transplantation in children in 1970 was considered by many to be unethical, as long-term survival was minimal. It was therefore risky at the time to offer transplantation to a child.

Case Diagnosis/treatment: A 6-year-old boy with kidney failure due to haemolytic uraemic syndrome received 4 months of intermittent peritoneal dialysis followed by 6 months of haemodialysis until at 6 years and 10 months, he underwent bilateral nephrectomy and received a kidney transplant from a deceased 18-year-old donor.

Early hemodynamic and renal effects of tumor necrosis factor alpha: role of thromboxane.

TNF alpha is an early mediator of endotoxemic shock. Its acute effect on renal hemodynamics is not known. In this study, the early hemodynamic and renal effects of TNF alpha were investigated in a rabbit model of shock, in which the measurement of the aortic blood flow before the bifurcation of the renal arteries allows one to differentiate between prerenal factors and hemodynamic renal response.

Effect of magnesium on phosphorus and calcium metabolism.

Magnesium is an element that occurs ubiquitously in nature. Magnesium and calcium metabolism are closely related. The intestinal absorption and the renal excretion of the two ions are interdependent.

Serum and intracellular magnesium during normal pregnancy and in patients with pre-eclampsia.

Atrial natriuretic factor after heart operations in children. Relation to hemodynamic and renal parameters.

The purpose of this study was to measure changes in serum atrial natriuretic factor concentrations immediately after heart operations in children under baseline conditions and in response to continuous infusion of dopamine (2.5 and 5.0 micrograms/kg/min).
