Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and multisystem organ dysfunction, is a life-threatening disease. Patients with TMA who do not exhibit a severe ADAMTS-13 deficiency (defined as a disintegrin-like and metalloprotease with thrombospondin type 1 motif no. 13 activity ≥10%: TMA-13n) continue to experience elevated mortality rates.

These closures, if are frequent and persistent, can seriously affect shellfish producers and the seafood industry, among others. In this study, we have developed an alternative processing method for bivalves with PSP content above the legal limit, which allows reducing toxicity to acceptable levels.

The proposed method is sensitive and simple and has good linear range and detection limits (less than 50 ng L(-1)) for most compound classes. The effect of ion suppression was studied in aqueous matrices from several treatment plants-including urban and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), drinking-water treatment plants (DWTPs) and seawater desalination plants (SWDPs)-and it was considered when quantifying our samples.
