The main risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) are chronic hyperglycemia, disease duration and systemic blood pressure. So far chronic hyperglycemia is the strongest evidence concerning the risk of developing DR. However there are some patients with poor metabolic control who never develop this diabetic complication.

A 19 year old female with pyoderma gangrenosum was referred to the oculoplastic clinic for evaluation of severe cicatricial ectropion of the right lower eyelid. Examination evidenced important scarring of lower eyelid and malar region with secondary ectropion. A full-thickness skin graft associated with a lateral tarsal strip procedure and scar tissue release was performed.

A novel human leucocyte antigen-DRB1*16 (HLA-DRB1*16) allele (DRB1*1609) has been identified by sequencing-based typing (SBT) in Chinese Han population. This new allele has identical nucleotide sequence to DRB1*160101 in exon 2, except for a single-nucleotide substitution from A to T at position 127. This change leads to an amino acid change from tyrosine to phenylalanin at residue 47 (Y47F).

A novel HLA-B*07 allele, B*0740, has been identified by sequence-based typing (SBT) in the Chinese Han population. This new allele is identical to B*0705 and B*0706 for exons 2, 3, and 4, except for a single nucleotide at position 605 of codon 202 in exon 3 (AAG-->ATG) leading to an amino acid change from lysine to methionine. SBT was performed following allele separation using the Haploprep method.

Purpose: Our teaching experience has shown that dealing with the molecular aspects of the immune response regulation poses several difficulties. Therefore, we developed a panel board to verify whether or not this active-learning exercise could enhance students' learning and arouse their interest in subjects that are basically theoretical and complex.

Methods: Twenty cardboard pieces labeled with the names of major regulators of the immune response and three panel boards with explanations on how major regulators work.
