Wound-healing and potential anti-keloidal properties of the latex of Calotropis procera (Aiton) Asclepiadaceae in rabbits.

Calotropis Procera (CP) has been used in the management of toothache, fresh skin burns, gum bleeding as well as others to make it qualify as a medicinal plant. This study was designed to assess its wound-healing property in rabbits and its potentials for anti keloidal activity.Fresh latex of Calotropis were obtained and evaluated phytochemically.

Studies on the acute and sub-chronic toxicity of the essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum L. leaf.

Oral and intra-peritoneal acute toxicity and the sub-chronic intra-peritoneal toxicity of the essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum Linn, Lamiaceae (Ocimum oil), was investigated. The acute toxicity test involved the oral and intra-peritoneal administration of graded doses of Ocimum oil prepared as a 4% v/v emulsion to 2 groups each of 30 rats and mice. LD50 and LD100 were determined for both routes and species.

An investigation into the wound-healing properties of essential oil of Ocimum gratissimum linn.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Ocimum oil and two antibacterial preparations, Cicatrin (GlaxoWellcome) and Cetavlex (AstraZeneca), on the healing of full-thickness excisional and incisional wounds, created under anaesthesia, on the back of test and control groups of adult albino rabbits.

Method: Treatment was by topical application of the test substances onto the wound surface for 15 days. Observation continued for a further six days.

Determination of the required HLB values of some essential oils.

The required HLB values of eucalyptus, lippia and peppermint essential oils were determined using droplet size analysis and turbidimetric method on emulsions prepared with emulsifier blends of varying HLB values. The percentage increase in mean droplet diameter and the degree of dispersion of droplet sizes were determined before and after centrifugation of the emulsions. The HLB value of the emulsion with the least dispersion ratio or the least percentage increase in mean droplet diameter was taken as the required HLB of the respective essential oil.

The formulation of an effective topical antibacterial product containing Ocimum gratissimum leaf essential oil.

The antibacterial potential of Ocimum gratissimum essential oil was explored. Liquid and semisolid formulations of the oil were designed in a variety of bases for topical antiseptic medication. The products were evaluated by agar diffusion assay against type strains and clinical isolates from boil, wound and pimples.
