Descriptive information on platelet (PLT) recipients, particularly during surgery, is limited. A description of the current epidemiology of PLT-transfused patients is required to optimize platelet transfusion care and to follow trends in PLT use. View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Matching for HLA genes located on chromosome 6 is required in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to reduce the incidence of graft-versus-host disease. However, a considerable proportion of patients still suffer from it, obviously due to genetic differences outside the HLA gene region.
Design And Methods: We studied the similarity of almost 4,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms on chromosome 6 between patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and their HLA-matched sibling donors.
Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt [s(NN)]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFData from Au + Au interactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.
