The hemocytes of Scutigera coleoptrata were investigated by light and electron microscopy. Four types of hemocytes were identified: prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granulocytes, and spherulocytes. Only granulocytes could be distinguished from the three other types by May-Grünwald staining, as this is the only hemocyte type demonstrating an eosinophilic reaction.

Hemocytes were taken into cell culture medium and challenged with latex beads, pre-fixed rat erythrocytes, or bacteria. After 1 to 4 hours in vitro hemocyte preparations were processed for electron microscopy.

The hemolymphs of two diplopod (Chicobolus sp. and Rhapidostreptus virgator) and two chilopod species (Lithobius forficatus and Scolopendra cingulata) were tested for the presence of antibacterial substances using Petri dish tests. The native hemolymph of all species had substances acting on living Micrococcus luteus, whereas only Rhapidostreptus, Scolopendra, and Lithobius were effective against lyophilized Micrococcus.
