Reversible right-sided congestive heart failure secondary to primary hyperaldosteronism in a cat.

A 10-year-old male castrated Somali cat presented with neurologic signs, severe systemic hypertension, and hypokalemia. Abdominal ultrasonography demonstrated a left adrenal mass, and the serum aldosterone concentration was increased. Computed tomography and follow-up diagnostic testing confirmed a left adrenal mass consistent with functional adenocarcinoma; additional findings included chronic airway and parenchymal disease.

Diagnostic utility of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and needle-core biopsy sampling of canine splenic masses.

This prospective clinical study sought to determine the accuracy of cytopathologic examination and needle-core biopsy (NCB) against diagnoses obtained by excisional histopathology (EH) for canine splenic masses. Twenty-five masses were evaluated by ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and NCB tissue sampling. Each spleen was placed in a container and artificial skin placed over its surface.

Evaluation of an enzyme immunoassay and immunodiffusion for detection of anti-Histoplasma antibodies in serum from cats and dogs.

Background: Histoplasma antigen and anti-Histoplasma antibody detection are used to support the diagnosis of histoplasmosis. There is a paucity of published data on antibody assays.

Objectives: Our primary hypothesis was that anti-Histoplasma immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody detection using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) will be more sensitive as compared to immunodiffusion (ID).

N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide, cardiac troponin-I, and point-of-care ultrasound in dogs with cardiac and noncardiac causes of nonhemorrhagic ascites.

Background: Nonhemorrhagic ascites (NHA) can be caused by cardiac diseases (cNHA) and noncardiac diseases (ncNHA). N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), cardiac troponin-I (cTnI), and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) may differentiate between cNHA and ncNHA.

Hypothesis/objectives: We compared NT-proBNP and cTnI concentrations as well as POCUS findings in dogs presented with cNHA and ncNHA.

A Serodiagnostic IgM ELISA to Detect Acute Cytauxzoonosis.

Cytauxzoonosis is a tick-borne infectious disease affecting domestic cats with high mortality and limited treatment modalities. Because early diagnosis and therapeutic intervention are crucial to survival of infected cats, the objective of this study was to develop an ELISA capable of detecting cytauxzoonosis and differentiating acute vs. chronic infection in clinical feline blood samples.
