Background: Existing best practices to monitor and prevent health care-associated infections (HAIs) were ineffective during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased patient susceptibility toward infections, reduced resources, and increased use of agency nurses.

Problem: A review of the US hospitals revealed a 60% increase in central line-associate bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and a 43% increase in catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) in 2020. A large, academic, level 1 trauma center in Houston, Texas, experienced similar challenges at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction: Preventable harm continues to occur with critically ill neonates despite efforts by hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) to improve processes and reduce harm. Attaining significant and sustainable improvements will require training including leadership support, mentoring, and patient family engagement to improve care processes. This paper describes the implementation of a robust process improvement (RPI) program in the NICU to reduce harm.

Drug addiction is a chronic disease defined by a complex set of characteristics, including loss of control over drug intake and persistent drug craving, which primarily affects a small percentage of people who try drugs. Although many models have been developed to study individual aspects of drug use, there is great translational value in having an animal model that encompasses multiple aspects of the human disease, including the variation in severity observed in humans. Here, we describe an intermittent access model of cocaine self-administration that produces a subset of rats that display many of the core features of addiction, including escalation of drug intake, a binge-like pattern of drug use, robust locomotor sensitization, and high levels of drug-seeking during cue-induced reinstatement.

Drug addiction is a chronic disease that is shaped by alterations in neuronal function within the cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic circuit. However, our understanding of how this circuit regulates drug-seeking remains incomplete, and relapse rates remain high. The midline thalamic nuclei are an integral component of the cortical-basal ganglia-thalamic circuit and are poised to mediate addiction behaviors, including relapse.
