The mutational drift of SARS-CoV-2 and the appearance of multiple variants, including the latest Omicron variant and its sub-lineages, has significantly reduced (and in some cases abolished) the protective efficacy of Wuhan spike-antigen-based vaccines and therapeutic antibodies. One of the most functionally constrained and thus largely invariable regions of the spike protein is the one involved in the interaction with the ACE2 receptor mediating the cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2. Engineered ACE2, both as a full-length protein or as an engineered polypeptide fragment, has been shown to be capable of preventing the host-cell binding of all viral variants and to be endowed with potent SARS-CoV-2 neutralization activity both in vitro and in vivo.

Facial expression recognition (FER) poses a complex challenge due to diverse factors such as facial morphology variations, lighting conditions, and cultural nuances in emotion representation. To address these hurdles, specific FER algorithms leverage advanced data analysis for inferring emotional states from facial expressions. In this study, we introduce a universal validation methodology assessing any FER algorithm's performance through a web application where subjects respond to emotive images.

In the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum, subjects report subjective memory complaints (SMCs), although with the absence of any objective decline, and have a higher risk of progressing to dementia than the general population. Early identification of this stage therefore constitutes a major focus of current AD research, to enable early intervention. In this study, healthy adult participants with high and low SMCs (HSMCs and LSMCs) performed a Go/NoGo task during electroencephalogram (EEG) recording.

Occupational exoskeletons are becoming a concrete solution to mitigate work-related musculoskeletal disorders associated with manual material handling activities. The rationale behind this study is to search for common ground for exoskeleton evaluators to engage in dialogue with corporate Health & Safety professionals while integrating exoskeletons with their workers. This study suggests an innovative interpretation of the effect of a lower-back assistive exoskeleton and related performances that are built on the benefit delivered through reduced activation of the erector spinae musculature.
