[Silymarin/galega administration in term and preterm mothers to sustain breast feeding: an observational study].

Aim: Breastfeeding is considered the most important source of nutrition both in the first year of life for term and preterm infants, because of its well-known positive effects on short and long-term outcome. Unfortunately not all the mothers can begin or maintain an adequate milk secretion. Premature delivery and prolonged length of stay in the hospital can influence maternal milk production due to maternal anxiety and/ or neonatal pathologies related to prematurity.

Clear cell sarcoma-like tumor with osteoclast-like giant cells in the small bowel: further evidence for a new tumor entity.

Most mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract belong to the category of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and are characterized by the immunohistochemical expression of KIT receptor. In cases without detectable KIT receptor expression several differential diagnoses have to be taken into consideration. Here, we report a case of a 41-year-old man with a tumor of the small bowel composed of large epithelioid tumor cells arranged in solid and alveolar sheets including scattered osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells.

[Advanced age as risk factor in liver resection surgery].

To evaluate the influence of age on the outcome of liver resections, 105 consecutive patients undergoing hepatic resection were divided into two groups: age > or = 65 years [Old Group (O-Group)] and age < 65 years [Young Group (Y-Group)]. O-Group and Y-Group patients were analyzed comparatively in terms of primary diagnosis, concomitant diseases, previous surgery, type of operation (major or minor resection), associated procedures, presence and length of portal clamping, intraoperative blood losses and transfusions, and length of operation. The end points of the study were postoperative mortality, morbidity, transfusions, and length of post-operative hospitalization.

Loss of FHIT function in lung cancer and preinvasive bronchial lesions.

We previously cloned and characterized the tumor suppressor gene FHIT (fragile histidine triad) at chromosome 3p14.2 and found that this gene is altered by deletions in human tumors, including lung cancer. To assess the frequency and specificity of inactivation and its relevance in a clinical setting, we have produced antibodies against the Fhit protein and studied its expression in a series of non-small cell lung cancers and normal bronchial mucosa and a spectrum of preinvasive lesions by immunohistochemistry.
