Background: In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) the scarcity of local cost data is a key barrier to conducting health economic evaluations. We systematically reviewed reports of disease-related costs from MENA and analysed their transferability within the region.

Methods: We searched PubMed and included full text English papers that reported disease-related costs from the local populations of Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen between 1995 and 2019.

Introduction: Mini-invasive bronchoscopic techniques (such as radial endobronchial ultrasonography (rEBUS) and electromagnetic navigation (EMN)) have been developed to reach the peripheral lung but result in small samples. The feasibility of an adequate molecular testing from these specimens has been very little studied.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed EMN and rEBUS procedures performed in patients diagnosed with lung cancer in our institution in 2017 and 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights that severe COVID-19 patients are likely to experience persistent pulmonary abnormalities, with over half still symptomatic four months after hospital admission.
  • A significant percentage of patients exhibited abnormal respiratory function, linked to factors like ICU admission and venous thromboembolism during their acute illness.
  • The main issue identified was reduced capillary volume in the lungs, impacting gas exchange; thus, follow-up evaluations for respiratory health are recommended post-recovery.

Endobronchial localizations of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are very unusual. We report the multimodal, bronchoscopic management of 3 cases, offering durable local control in all cases (including 2 patients who were definitively cured). Although surgery is usually considered the gold standard, therapeutic bronchoscopy should probably be considered as a frontline option for proximal lesions with limited base (< 10 mm) because of uncommon metastatic spread and delayed local recurrence.
