Two >130-meter-diameter impact craters formed on Mars during the later half of 2021. These are the two largest fresh impact craters discovered by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter since operations started 16 years ago. The impacts created two of the largest seismic events (magnitudes greater than 4) recorded by InSight during its 3-year mission.

Here, we determine the structure of the crust beneath the InSight landing site on Mars using both marsquake recordings and the ambient wavefield. By analyzing seismic phases that are reflected and converted at subsurface interfaces, we find that the observations are consistent with models with at least two and possibly three interfaces.

This study focuses on imaging local changes in heterogeneous media. The method employed is demonstrated and validated using numerical experiments of acoustic wave propagation in a multiple scattering medium. Changes are simulated by adding new scatterers of different sizes at various positions in the medium, and the induced decorrelation of the diffuse (coda) waveforms is measured for different pairs of sensors.
