A complicated case of cholecystitis, listeriosis and HIV/AIDS.

A 37-year-old woman of Tanzanian origin presented with symptoms of cholecystitis, sepsis and oral candidiasis. Subsequent investigation found listeriosis and HIV infection. Effective use of the appropriate antibiotics and surgical management to remove the source of sepsis lead to a good recovery from the acute illness.

Long-term changes in social interaction and reward following repeated MDMA administration to adolescent rats without accompanying serotonergic neurotoxicity.

Rationale: MDMA is a popular drug of abuse in adolescents which causes serotonergic neurotoxicity in adult but not young rodents. However, few studies have examined the long-term behavioural consequence of MDMA and it is unclear whether such changes occur in the absence of neurotoxicity.

Objectives: The present study examined whether treatment of young rats with MDMA produced long-term behavioural alterations without accompanying serotonergic neurotoxicity.

Photosensitization of Staphylococcus aureus with malachite green isothiocyanate: inactivation efficiency and spectroscopic analysis.

The potential of malachite green isothiocyanate as a photosensitizer for the inactivation of bacteria has been evaluated. Samples of Staphylococcus aureus are treated with the dye and exposed to continuous-wave red light from a filtered xenon lamp. Reduction in cell viability is seen to increase with radiation dose, whilst non-photosensitized samples are largely unaffected with exposure.
