- The study involved 2,162 participants from six countries who underwent extensive genomic sequencing and analysis to detect genetic factors linked to these dementias.
- Results highlighted a mix of American, African, and European ancestries, discovered 17 pathogenic variants, and revealed specific genetic variations tied to AD and FTD inheritance patterns in affected families.
While age-specific dementia prevalence is falling in many countries, several recent reviews estimate prevalence in Latin America to be higher than anywhere else in the world. This may be, in part, due to the high incidence of socioeconomic and health-related risk factors present in the region. However, growing evidence suggests that primary and secondary prevention via modifiable risk factors is possible, and that 40% of cases may be mitigated through interventions which target modifiable risk.

This study presents an important long-term historical analysis of water quality in an internationally crucial waterway (the Solent, Hampshire, UK), in the context of increasing adoption of open-loop Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems by shipping. The pollutants studied were acidification (pH), zinc, and benzo [a] pyrene, alongside temperature. We compared baseline sites to locations likely to be impacted by pollution.
