Article Synopsis
  • Natural killer (NK) cells are a type of innate immune cell that respond to virus-infected or cancerous cells without prior exposure, helping to develop long-lasting immunity.
  • In stem cell transplants, NK cells are vital for fighting against leukemia due to their graft versus leukemia effect and their predominantly regulatory role in tissues.
  • Current research focuses on the effectiveness of using non-genetically modified NK cells for treating relapsed or refractory acute leukemia, indicating that the persistence and expansion of donor cells in peripheral blood do not necessarily correlate with successful anti-leukemia activity.

Patients with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) have a five-year survival rate of 28·7%. Natural killer (NK)-cell have anti-leukaemic activity. Here, we report on a series of 13 patients with high-risk R/R AML, treated with repeated infusions of double-bright (CD56 /CD16 ) expanded NK cells at an academic centre in Brazil.
