We found Mycobacterium leprae, the most common etiologic agent of Hansen disease or leprosy, in tissues from 9 (18.75%) of 48 nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) collected across continental Ecuador. Finding evidence of a wildlife reservoir is the first step to recognizing leprosy zoonotic transmission pathway in Ecuador or elsewhere.

The successor representation has emerged as a powerful model for understanding mammalian navigation and memory; explaining the spatial coding properties of hippocampal place cells and entorhinal grid cells. However, the diverse spatial responses of subicular neurons, the primary output of the hippocampus, have eluded a unified account. Here, we demonstrate that incorporating rodent behavioural biases into the successor representation successfully reproduces the heterogeneous activity patterns of subicular neurons.

Cancer evolution is a multifaceted process leading to dysregulation of cellular expansion and differentiation through somatic mutations and epigenetic dysfunction. Clonal expansion and evolution is driven by cell-intrinsic and -extrinsic selective pressures, which can be captured with increasing resolution by single-cell and bulk DNA sequencing. Despite the extensive genomic alterations revealed in profiling studies, there remain limited experimental systems to model and perturb evolutionary processes.

JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) infects the majority of the population and initially establishes a persistent but asymptomatic infection of the kidneys. In healthy individuals, the infection remains controlled by the host immune system, but for individuals experiencing prolonged immunosuppression, the infection can reactivate and spread to the brain, where it causes progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which is a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Currently, there are no approved therapies to treat PML, and affected individuals suffer rapid motor weakness and cognitive deterioration.
