While mercury occurs naturally in the environment, human activity has significantly disturbed its biogeochemical cycle. Inorganic mercury entering aquatic systems can be transformed into methylmercury, a strong neurotoxicant that builds up in organisms and affects ecosystem and public health. In the Arctic, top predators such as beluga whales, an ecologically and culturally significant species for many Inuit communities, can contain high concentrations of methylmercury.

Mercury in marine biota has been extensively studied across Inuit Nunaat because it bioaccumulates and biomagnifies in high trophic level species, such as the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), or qilalugaq in Inuktut. Qilalugaait (pl) are a staple in many coastal Inuit communities, including Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories and Arviat, Nunavut. We examine how total mercury (THg) concentrations in two beluga populations are influenced by biased sampling resulting from local harvester preferences.

Ultraviolet (UV) absorbents and industrial antioxidants are two groups of plastic-derived contaminants of emerging environmental concern. However, their distribution and fate are poorly understood in Arctic wildlife. In the present study, 16 UV absorbents (10 benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs) and 6 organic UV filters (UVFs)) and 7 industrial antioxidants (6 aromatic secondary amines (Ar-SAs) and 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol (26DTBP)) were analyzed in the livers of thick-billed murre (Uria lomvia; n = 28), northern fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis; n = 4), black guillemot (Cepphus grylle; n = 11), polar bear (Ursus maritimus; n = 18), beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas; n = 10), landlocked (n = 25) and sea-run (n = 10) Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) from the Canadian Arctic collected between 2017 and 2021.

Beluga whales play a critical role in the subsistence economies and cultural heritage of Indigenous communities across the Arctic, yet the effects of Indigenous hunting on beluga whales remain unknown. Here, we integrate paleogenomics, genetic simulations, and stable C and N isotope analysis to investigate 700 y of beluga subsistence hunting in the Mackenzie Delta area of northwestern Canada. Genetic identification of the zooarchaeological remains, which is based on radiocarbon dating, span three time periods (1290 to 1440 CE; 1450 to 1650 CE; 1800 to 1870 CE), indicates shifts across time in the sex ratio of the harvested belugas.

There is increasing interest in One Health and Indigenous methodologies and approaches in wildlife research, but they are not widely used research applications in the Arctic. Both approaches are wide in scope and originate from different knowledge systems but are often compared synonymously. We review the literature of overlap between the term One Health and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (Inuit Indigenous Knowledge) throughout Inuit Nunaat on wildlife research.
