Article Synopsis
  • Megachiroptera, a suborder of mammals including old world fruit bats, commonly faces health issues such as liver, kidney, and heart diseases, which can complicate their blood clotting abilities.
  • The study aimed to analyze coagulation data from captive large and variable flying foxes using the Viscoelastic Coagulation Monitor (VCM) Vet, examining differences between healthy and treated bats, and correlations with traditional clotting metrics.
  • Results revealed significant variability in clotting responses among the bats, with distinct prolonged coagulation pathways compared to other mammals, but lacked strong statistical correlations between measured parameters, suggesting complex nuances in Megachiroptera hemostasis.

Article Synopsis
  • Consumers in different regions, including Africa, Latin America, and Asia, have specific preferences for boiled cassava concerning texture, color, and taste, which need to be understood and incorporated into breeding programs.
  • Surveys identified seven key quality attributes of boiled cassava, and contrasting genotypes were analyzed for these traits, resulting in the establishment of consumer preference scores and their acceptable thresholds.
  • The study successfully outlines a method for determining priority attributes and their acceptability thresholds, which can guide cassava breeders to improve the quality and adoption of new cassava varieties.

Background: Cassava roots are widely consumed in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Although the protein, vitamin, carotenoid, and mineral content in the leaves makes them a nutritionally attractive option, their consumption is limited due to their high levels of cyanogenic compounds (CCs). In this study, the CC content in different parts of the plant (leaves, storage root cortex, and parenchyma) was assessed at harvest for 50 landrace genotypes representative of cassava diversity in Latin America.
