The impact of a 24-h ultraendurance exercise bout on systemic and local muscle inflammatory reactions was investigated in nine experienced athletes. Blood and muscle biopsies were collected before (Pre), immediately after the exercise bout (Post), and after 28 h of recovery (Post28). Circulating blood levels of leukocytes, creatine kinase (CK), C-reactive protein (CRP), and selected inflammatory cytokines were assessed together with the evaluation of the occurrence of inflammatory cells (CD3(+), CD8(+), CD68(+)) and the expression of major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC class I) in skeletal muscle.

The presence of autoantibodies against C-reactive protein (anti-CRP) has been reported in association with autoimmunity and histopathology in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Resistin could play a role in the pathogenesis of hepatitis, although results on HCV infection are ambiguous. Here we retrospectively analyzed anti-CRP and resistin levels in the sera of 38 untreated and well-characterized HCV patients at the time of their first liver biopsy.

Infantile systemic hyalinosis (ISH) is a rare, progressive autosomal recessive disease, which is usually fatal by the age of 2 years. Clinical onset typically occurs within the first few weeks of life. The disease is characterized by joint contractures, osteopenia, failure to thrive, gingival hypertrophy, diarrhea, protein-losing enteropathy, and frequent infections.

Two separate tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors of approximately 55 kDa (TNF-R55) and 75 kDa (TNF-R75) have been identified. The role of protein kinase A activation by dibutyryl cAMP (dbcAMP) and of protein kinase C activation with phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) for transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation of the two receptors was investigated in promyelocytic HL-60 cells. Incubation with dbcAMP or the adenylate cyclase agonist forskolin caused an increase in the level of TNF-R75 mRNA while TNF-R55 mRNA was unaffected.

Soluble forms of receptors for tumor necrosis factor (TNF) might be important for regulating the actions of TNF. Site-directed in vitro mutagenesis was employed to examine the processing of the p55 tumor necrosis factor receptor chain (TNF-R55) into soluble TNF-binding protein (TNF-R55-BP). An Asn/Val sequence close to the transmembrane region in TNF-R55 was indicated as a putative cleavage site for proteolytic processing.
