is a body-louse-borne bacterium. Canadian disease has been reported primarily in populations experiencing homelessness and in Indigenous communities with limited access to water. We sought to understand the epidemiology of in Canada.

Phonon engineering is crucial for thermal management in GaN-based power devices, where phonon-defect interactions limit performance. However, detecting nanoscale phonon transport constrained by III-nitride defects is challenging due to limited spatial resolution. Here, we used advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy to examine vibrational modes in a prismatic stacking fault in GaN.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined body lice taken from individuals experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg over the years 2020-2021.
  • A total of 556 lice were collected from 7 people, with a significant finding of 218 lice from one individual testing positive for the pathogen Bartonella quintana.
  • The research aimed to identify the types of lice and the diseases they might carry, highlighting public health concerns in vulnerable populations.

Avian influenza A virus (IAV) surveillance in Northern California, USA, revealed unique IAV hemagglutinin (HA) genome sequences in cloacal swabs from lesser scaups. We found two closely related HA sequences in the same duck species in 2010 and 2013. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that both sequences belong to the recently discovered H19 subtype, which thus far has remained uncharacterized.

In general, vibrational physics has been well described by quantum perturbation theory to provide footprint characteristics for common crystals. However, despite weak phonon anharmonicity, the recently discovered cubic crystals have shown anomalous vibrational dynamics with elusive fundamental origin. Here, we developed a non-perturbative approach, in together with spectroscopy and high-pressure experiments, to successfully determine the exact dynamic evolutions of the vibrational physics for the first time.
