Although animals can reliably locate and recognize odorants embedded in complex environments, the neural circuits for accomplishing these tasks remain incompletely understood. Adaptation is likely to be important as it could allow neurons in a brain area to adjust to the broader sensory environment. Adaptive processes must be flexible enough to allow the brain to make dynamic adjustments, while maintaining sufficient stability so that organisms do not forget important olfactory associations.

Plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases are a cause of acquired cephalosporin resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. However, consensus regarding the optimal detection method is yet to be achieved and varies depending on local epidemiology and laboratory capacity. We determined the acquired genotypic resistance mechanisms of 250 isolates with a positive AmpC screen, defined as cefoxitin MIC ≥ 8 mg/L and a positive AmpC double- disc diffusion test, using in-house designed high-resolution melt PCR, detecting plasmid-acquired genes from the CIT and DHA families.

The bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus is ubiquitous in tropical and temperate waters throughout the world and causes infections in humans resulting from water exposure and from ingestion of contaminated raw or undercooked seafood, such as oysters. We describe a nationwide outbreak of enteric infections caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Australia during September 2021-January 2022. A total of 268 persons were linked with the outbreak, 97% of whom reported consuming Australia-grown oysters.
