Bacterial toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems consist of two or more adjacent genes, encoding a toxin and an antitoxin. TA systems are implicated in evolutionary and physiological functions including genome maintenance, antibiotics persistence, phage defense, and virulence. Protists play important roles in shaping the microbial community of the rhizosphere and defining these roles will require the study of protist isolates. However, there is still a limited understanding of how well protist isolation efforts can capture the diversity and composition of rhizosphere protistan communities. Here, we report a simultaneous isolation and 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing survey describing the protist diversity of maize rhizospheres in two climatically and pedologically distinct sites.

Background: Gradient strip antimicrobial susceptibility testing using Etest is conducted by local public health jurisdictions participating in the Strengthening the US Response to Resistant Gonorrhea (SURRG) program to inform public health responses to resistant gonorrhea. Proficiency testing results across the participating laboratories were analyzed and a comparison of Etest with the agar dilution method was conducted.

Methods: Laboratories participating in SURRG performed Etest for azithromycin (AZM), cefixime (CFX), and ceftriaxone (CRO).
