Transitions in development: an interview with Margherita Turco.

Margherita Turco is a group leader at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research (FMI) in Basel, Switzerland, where she uses organoid technologies to investigate human placental development. We met with Margherita over Zoom to discuss her career path so far. She told us how her early interest in reproductive technologies led her to a postdoctoral position in Cambridge, UK, where she derived the first human placental and uterine organoids and established her independent research group.

Class of 1923: looking back at the authors of JEB's first issue.

Journal of Experimental Biology was launched in 1923 as The British Journal of Experimental Biology, with a single issue being published in the October of that year. As we celebrate our centenary, we look back at that first issue and the zoologists publishing their work in the new journal, and draw comparisons to the JEB that we know today. Much has changed since the publication of the first issue of JEB, in the worlds of both science and publishing, and we eagerly anticipate the next 100 years of discovery.

Centriole distal-end proteins CP110 and Cep97 influence centriole cartwheel growth at the proximal end.

Centrioles are composed of a central cartwheel tethered to nine-fold symmetric microtubule (MT) blades. The centriole cartwheel and MTs are thought to grow from opposite ends of these organelles, so it is unclear how they coordinate their assembly. We previously showed that in Drosophila embryos an oscillation of Polo-like kinase 4 (Plk4) helps to initiate and time the growth of the cartwheel at the proximal end.

A Focus Group Study of Provider and Patient Perceptions of Communicating Advanced Care Planning Wishes Using Digital Storytelling.

Advanced care planning (ACP) and end-of-life discussions are especially difficult among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as a result of patients' lack of trust in family and providers, HIV-related stigma, misunderstood spirituality concerns, social isolation, and other factors. Previous research has demonstrated that relatively few persons living with HIV/AIDS engage in ACP, yet developing culturally sensitive methods of ACP is imperative. One such method is digital storytelling, a video narrative that can be used to share ideas or aspects of a life story.
