Rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure associated with pyloric stenosis.

Rhabdomyolysis and acute tubular necrosis (ATN) are described in a patient with pyloric stenosis in whom severe hypokalemia developed due to repetitive vomiting. Furthermore, the importance of hypokalemia in the development of acute renal failure is emphasized.

Effect of peritoneal dialysis on plasma levels of ascorbic acid.

The effect of peritoneal dialysis on plasma ascorbate levels was investigated in 32 patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. Our studies demonstrated a high peritoneal clearance of ascorbic acid resulting in a significant loss into the dialysate. The quantity of ascorbic acid lost by patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis was proportional to the predialysis ascorbic acid levels.

The effect of oxyfedrine on the phases of the cardiac cycle of normal persons.

With non-invasive techniques we have studied the effects of oxyfedrine given i.v. in a dose of 8 mg on the systolic phase of cardiac cycle in 10 cardiologically healthy persons.

Haemoglobin D and D thalassaemia. A family report, comprising 18 members.

On the occasion of a double heterozygote case of D haemoglobinopathy/beta-thalassaemia (D thalassaemia) from Epirus (Greece), a family study was performed. It comprised 18 members, belonging to 3 generations, and revealed the presence of an additional D thalassaemia case, 4 D haemoglobinopathy heterozygotes, 5 beta-thalassaemia heterozygotes and 7 normal persons. The D thalassaemia cases were initially considered as Hb D homozygotes, according to their electrophoretic phenotype; the family study, however, showed the true nature of their stigmata.
