External quality assurance system (EQAS) for identification of mastitis pathogens in Denmark from 2006 to 2011.

Bovine mastitis is the most common and costly dairy cattle disease. Mastitis is most frequently caused by bacterial species, and to ensure optimal treatment and control strategies, proper quality assured diagnosis and identification of the causative agent is important. With the aim to assess the capacity to isolate and identify mastitis pathogens at veterinary clinics, an external quality assurance system (EQAS) was annually (from 2006 to 2011) provided for the identification of mastitis pathogens.

Selection of method is crucial for the diagnosis of porcine circovirus type 2 associated reproductive failures.

During a 2-month period a newly repopulated Danish pig herd experienced an increase in numbers of stillborn and mummies, caused by porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) associated reproductive failure. Based on recordings of data over time, the progression of the clinical outbreak was studied and the diagnostic value of different techniques was evaluated. Foetal hearts (38 cases and 13 controls) were examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of PCV2; and total immunoglobulin G (IgG) was measured in pleura cavity fluid.

[Malignant struma ovarii: false positive PET image for suspected metastasis due to sarcoidosis].

Struma ovarii is an ovarian teratoma mainly composed of thyroid tissue, which can become malignant with possible peritoneal dissemination or even distant metastases. Therapeutic management follows protocols used for thyroid cancer. We report the first use of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) in the follow-up of malignant struma ovarii with persistently elevated serum thyroglobulin level and negative diagnostic iodine 131 whole body scan after thyroidectomy and four courses of 131 iodine.

Struma ovarii, a rare form of ovarian tumor, represents less than 3% of ovarian teratomas. The peak frequency occurs during the fifth decade of life. Diagnosis is usually a surprise of pelvic ultrasound or histological analysis.
