Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates that adhesion molecules, particularly ICAM-1, play a role in the development of diabetic retinopathy and are found in cells involved in inflammation and abnormal blood vessel growth.
  • A study examined conjunctival tissue from 15 diabetic patients without retinopathy and found higher levels of ICAM-1 compared to normal tissues from five cataract patients, suggesting a difference in cellular expression between the two groups.
  • The findings imply that the presence of ICAM-1 in diabetic patients may contribute to understanding the early stages or mechanisms behind diabetic retinopathy.

The expression pattern of VEGF, p53 and ICAM-1 was studied in conjunctiva of diabetic patients with and without retinopathy. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including retinal fluorescein angiography. Indirect immunoperoxidase method was performed on 20 eyes of 20 patients with type II diabetes without DR and on 5 eyes of 5 patients with PDR.

Introduction: Anatomical and functional results of the treatment of retinal detachment associated with giant retinal tear have been markedly improved with the development of the vitrectomy procedure and especially the use of perfluorocarbon liquids. In this study, we report treatment results of retinal detachment associated with giant tear in 17 patients.

Materials And Methods: Our study included 17 patients (17 eyes), aged between 18 and 61 years, with retinal detachment associated with giant retinal tear.
