Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a common problem, can impair function and quality of life in patients, potentially limiting chemotherapy and adversely affecting outcomes.

Methods: This trial compared investigational hand therapy intervention (Investigational) compared with a traditional occupational therapy approach (Traditional) to prevent CIPN in patients with pancreatic cancer receiving gemcitabine and albumin-bound paclitaxel containing regimens.

Results: forty-nine patients were enrolled with 40 evaluable for statistical analysis (21 Investigational/19 Traditional).

This protocol was developed to utilize imaging flow cytometry (IFCM) in combination with fluorescent dyes to both enumerate and analyze morphological features of live and dead cells in a mixed live/dead bacterial sample. The fluorescent dyes used in this protocol include 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate (CFDA), which indicates the functional activity of esterase inside viable bacterial cells, and DRAQ7, a dye that exploits membrane-compromised bacterial cells to enter and stain the cell. The live cell population stained with CFDA emits a fluorescent green color while the dead cell population stained with DRAQ7 emits a fluorescent red color, which allows the two populations to be distinctively separated by the IFCM system.

A transposon insertional mutagenesis spore library of the pathogen Bacillus anthracis was screened to identify mutants altered in germination kinetics. One mutant exhibited an accelerated rate of germination in association with disruption of benK. This gene encodes a putative protein with high homology to membrane transporters that facilitate benzoate transport.

Current vaccine approaches to combat anthrax are effective; however, they target only a single protein [the protective antigen (PA) toxin component] that is produced after spore germination. PA production is subsequently increased during later vegetative cell proliferation. Accordingly, several aspects of the vaccine strategy could be improved.
