Sponge microbiomes are often highly diverse making it difficult to determine which lineages are important for maintaining host health and homeostasis. Characterising genomic traits associated with symbiosis can improve our knowledge of which lineages have adapted to their host and what functions they might provide. Here we examined five microbial families associated with sponges that have previously shown evidence of cophylogeny, including Endozoicomonadaceae, Nitrosopumilaceae, Spirochaetaceae, Microtrichaceae and Thermoanaerobaculaceae, to better understand the mechanisms behind their symbiosis.

Aim: People with chronic kidney disease experience high rates of cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol-lowering therapy is a mainstay in the management but there is uncertainty in the treatment effects on patient-important outcomes, such as fatigue and rhabdomyolysis. Here, we summarise the updated CARI Australian and New Zealand Living Guidelines on cholesterol-lowering therapy in chronic kidney disease.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria are common members of marine sponge microbiomes. They derive energy for carbon fixation and growth from nitrification-the aerobic oxidation of ammonia to nitrite and further to nitrate-and are proposed to play essential roles in the carbon and nitrogen cycling of sponge holobionts. In this study, we characterize two novel nitrifying symbiont lineages, Candidatus Nitrosokoinonia and Candidatus Nitrosymbion in the marine sponge Coscinoderma matthewsi using a combination of molecular tools, in situ visualization, and physiological rate measurements.

Purpose: To investigate whether the patellotrochlear index (PTI) predicts patella alta as determined by tibial-based methods of Insall-Salvati (IS) and Caton-Deschamp (CDI) indexes in a pathological population (with patellofemoral pain and/or instability), in addition to determining whether PTI and sagittal patellofemoral engagement (SPE) correlate with trochlea length as determined by lateral condyle index (LCI).

Methods: Patients with confirmed patella alta (IS/CDI ratio >1.2) undergoing tibial tubercle osteotomy for patellofemoral pain/instability with an available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were included.

Allogeneic chondrocyte therapies need to be developed to allow more individuals to be treated with a cell therapy for cartilage repair and to reduce the burden and cost of the current two-stage autologous procedures. Upscale manufacture of chondrocytes using a bioreactor could help provide an off-the-shelf allogeneic chondrocyte therapy with many doses being produced in a single manufacturing run. In this study, we assess a good manufacturing practice-compliant hollow-fiber bioreactor (Quantum) for adult chondrocyte manufacture.
