Abstract: Rearranged during transfection (RET) is a developmentally important receptor tyrosine kinase that has been identified as an oncogenic driver in a number of cancers. Activating RET point mutations gives rise to the inherited cancer syndrome multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2), characterized by medullary thyroid carcinoma. There are two MEN2 subtypes, MEN2A and MEN2B, that differ in tumour aggressiveness and the associated constellation of other disease features, which are caused by distinct patterns of RET amino acid substitution mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • Fatal falls involving stairs are common in older adults and those with certain health conditions, but often the role of a third party is hard to determine based solely on medical examination.
  • The study aimed to analyze cases of fatal stair falls over a decade to distinguish between those classified as accidental and those deemed undetermined.
  • Findings revealed that undetermined falls had more severe injuries, like craniofacial fractures and intracranial damage, indicating a need for in-depth investigations by coroners beyond just the medical evidence.

However, social care for this vulnerable group is generally inadequate. There is uncertainty and confusion about who is legally responsible for this and how it can best be provided, and a lack of integration with healthcare.

Unlabelled: The pattern of neck injuries sustained in fatal cases of external compression to the neck is recorded during Post Mortem Examinations (PME), to assist in the interpretation of the circumstances that led to death. In this study, the PMEs performed for 298 cases of hanging and strangulation occurring between 2016 and 2020 in Ireland were retrospectively reviewed for the purpose of recording and collating the external and internal neck injuries observed during each PME, as well as the toxicology results for each decedent. Statistical analysis was performed to investigate potential novel associations between anthropometric variables pertaining to the decedents and the PME findings in cases of hanging and strangulation, serving to add further data to the existing body of research in this area and to assist in the resolution of future cases of hanging or strangulation where there are conflicting findings.
