There is enormous potential for global transfer of microorganisms, including pathogens, in ships' ballast water. We contend that a major advancement in the study of ballast-water microorganisms in particular, and of aquatic pathogens in general, will be expedited sample analysis, such as provided by the elegant technology of DNA microarrays. In order to use DNA microarrays, however, one must establish the appropriate conditions to bind target sequences in samples to multiple probes on the microarrays.

The evolution of bone marrow failure syndromes such as aplastic anemia (AA) to clonal hematologic diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome is well recognized. Cytogenetic abnormalities are commonly seen late events, particularly aneuploidy of chromosomes 7 and 8. A proportion of bone marrow failure patients may also develop aneuploidy that is detectable by fluorescence in situ hybridization but not by standard cytogenetic analysis.

Group A streptococci produce an extracellular hyaluronidase (hyaluronate lyase) which may be associated with the spread of the organism during infection. The gene for this hyaluronidase (hylA) encodes an 868 amino acid protein with a molecular size of 99636 Da. Cleavage of the proposed signal peptide results in an extracellular protein of 95941 Da.
