To determine the clinical significance of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), anticardiolipin (aCL) (IgG and IgM) and lupus anticoagulant (LA) were sought at diagnosis in 215 ITP adults with platelets <50 x 10(9)/l. aPL (aCL and/or LA) were detected in 55 patients (26%): aCL alone in 39 (18%), aCL and LA in 15 (7%) and LA alone in one (0.5%).

Purpose: Approximately 15% of patients with localized and 30% with disseminated classical Hodgkin's lymphoma fail to respond or relapse after first-line treatment. Usual prognosis scoring systems are actually unable to identify this small subset of patients with good confidence, pointing out the need for additional prognostic biomarkers.

Patients And Methods: We prospectively analyzed the prognosis value of plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), its soluble receptors TNF-R1 and TNF-R2, IL-10, IL1-RA, IL-6, and soluble CD30 (sCD30) when taken before any treatment in 519 consecutive patients with a first diagnosis of classical Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The factors leading to spontaneous clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) or to viral persistence are elusive. Understanding virus-host interactions that enable acute HCV clearance is key to the development of more effective therapeutic and prophylactic strategies. Here, using a sensitive neutralization assay based on infectious HCV pseudoparticles (HCVpp), we have studied the kinetics of humoral responses in a cohort of acute-phase patients infected during a single nosocomial outbreak in a hemodialysis center.

The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical impact of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related cryoglobulinemia in patients that had received liver transplants after HCV cirrhosis. Thirty patients who had received transplants between 1990 and 1996 for HCV cirrhosis and who had a follow-up longer than 1 year were studied. Serum HCV RNA levels, HCV genotype, cryoglobulinemia, rheumatoid factor, serum C3 and C4, IgA, IgG, IgM levels, liver tests, and liver histology were studied 30 +/- 16 months post-transplant.

Patients with total hip arthroplasty were screened for the presence of proinflammatory cytokines in the systemic circulation. Only increased levels of interleukin-6 were detected in patients having had total hip arthroplasty more than 10 years ago. These increased levels of interleukin-6 were associated with a decrease in bone mineral density associated with polyethylene wear and with radiologic osteolysis in some patients.
