Surveillance of post-operative infections and management of antibiotic surgical prophylaxis in an Italian region.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of post-surgical infections and to assess management of antibiotic surgical prophylaxis. The survey was carried out by means of a questionnaire in order to obtain diverse information such as demographics, length of pre- and post-operative hospitalization, type of surgery, intervention duration, possible antibiotic prophylaxis and onset of post-surgical infections also monitored by post-discharge ambulatory controls. Four General Surgery and five Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments in Campania (southern Italy) participated in the study, which was carried out from December 2001-January 2002.

[Surgical therapy of varicocele. Technical note on the inguinal approach].

Background: There are several therapeutic proposals for idiopathic varicocele treatment, but all of them present a certain number of relapses. The technique proposed consists, through an inguinal approach, in a systematic ligation and section of all veins potentially responsible of a venous reflux.

Methods: During a period from 1990-1995 a total of 73 patients were surgically treated for idiopathic varicocele with this technique.

[The colorectal restoration. When should it be done?].

The authors report a series of 10 reconnections, 4 after Hartmann operations for cancer, 3 after Mikulicz for diverticular disease, 1 after Hartmann for diverticular disease, 2 after Hartmann for traumatic perforation of sigma. Neither surgical complications nor death are reported. To reduce the risk of complication it is necessary to execute colorectal restoration with careful fiming.

[Infarction of the sigmoid. Clinical considerations].

The authors present a case of sigma infarction. They examine the etiopathogenesis, underline the clinical and instrumental signs and discurs the vascular anatomy and diagnostic difficulties. Operation is considered to be necessary to reduce the severe of prognosis.
