To reveal systemic and local osteoporosis, the authors studied biochemical markers of bone metabolism in vibration disease patients. The vibration disease patients appeared to have the most frequent and marked osteoporosis in peripheral bones--hands (in 90% of cases) and forearms (in 66.7%).

Altogether 184 patients with bone, renal or mixed hyperparathyroidism (HPT) presenting primarily were examined for blood levels of parathyroid hormone and indirect indicators of parathyroid function. None of the indices (calcium concentration, phosphorus level, serum activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase, oxyproline excretion with urine, etc.) was changed.
