Approximately 200,000 spinal fractures occur each year in Germany. The decimated stability of the vertebra often leads to type A fractures with a substantial influence by osteoporosis. A mobility preserving and gentle treatment has clear advantages compared to conservative treatment.

Background: Spondylodiscitis is a chameleon among infectious diseases due to the lack of specific symptoms with which it is associated. It is nevertheless a serious infection, with 7% mortality of hospitalized patients, in large part because of delayed diagnosis. The aim of this study was to develop a diagnosis and course-of-disease index to optimize its treatment.

[Adjacent segment degeneration following spinal fusion of vertebral fractures in paraplegic patients].

The effects of adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) after spinal fusion of vertebral fractures have previously not been demonstrated in patients with trauma-related paraplegia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ASD in patients with paraplegia caused by vertebral fractures and to observe whether there is a difference between unilateral or combined spinal fusion in long-term results regarding the degeneration of cranial or caudal adjacent spinal segments. A total of 111 paraplegic patients with an average age of 45 years who underwent spinal fusion of vertebral fractures were observed in a retrospective longitudinal study with a follow-up period of 4 years.

Spondylodiscitis is a rare but serious infection of the spine. Recognised methods of treatment include immobilisation and systemic antibiotics. However, available data for specific and recommendations for continuing treatment are also rare.
