Revising cancer incidence in a Central European country: a Hungarian nationwide study between 2011-2019 based on a health insurance fund database.

Background: The nationwide HUN-CANCER EPI study examined cancer incidence and mortality rates in Hungary from 2011 to 2019.

Methods: Using data from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), our retrospective study analyzed newly diagnosed malignancies between Jan 1, 2011, and Dec 31, 2019. Age-standardized incidence and mortality rates were calculated for all and for different tumor types using both the 1976 and 2013 European Standard Populations (ESP).

Financial scarcity and financial avoidance: an eye-tracking and behavioral experiment.

When having less money than needed, people experience financial scarcity. Here, we conducted a laboratory experiment to investigate whether financial scarcity increases financial avoidance - the tendency to avoid dealing with ones finances. Participants completed an incentivized task where they managed the finances of a household by earning income and paying expenses across multiple rounds.

[County differences in incidence and mortality of malignant neoplasms in Hungary between 2005 and 2019].

The objective of our study was to map county differences in incidence and mortality by cancers and examine their changes over time. Based on the database of National Cancer Registry and Central Statistical Office, age-standardized incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 person-years were calculated for each county for 15 cancer types and 3 time periods. East-West divide was apparent in incidence and mortality of lung cancer, with larger weight in East (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Békés counties).

Stimulated emission double depletion nanoscopy with background correction at the single-pixel level.

Fluorescence microscopy images are inevitably tainted by background contributions including emission from out-of-focus planes, scattered light, and detector noise. In stimulated emission depletion (STED) nanoscopy, an additional, method-specific background arises from incomplete depletion and re-excitation by the depletion beam. Various approaches have been proposed to remove the background from a STED image, some of which rely on the acquisition of a separate background image that is subtracted from the STED image with a weighting factor.

Partner choice and cooperation in social dilemmas can increase resource inequality.

Cooperation is more likely when individuals can choose their interaction partner. However, partner choice may be detrimental in unequal societies, in which individuals differ in available resources and productivity, and thus in their attractiveness as interaction partners. Here we experimentally examine this conjecture in a repeated public goods game.
