Background: Understanding site-related factors that influence enrolment within multicenter randomized controlled trials (RCT) may help reduce trial delays and cost over-runs and prevent early trial discontinuation. In this analysis of PROSPECT (Probiotics: Prevention of Severe Pneumonia and Endotracheal Colonization Trial), we describe patient enrolment patterns and examine factors influencing site-based monthly enrolment.

Design: Retrospective analysis of a multicenter RCT.

Article Synopsis
  • The research highlights a gap in addiction studies, which mostly focus on reward and impulsivity, while the withdrawal or negative affect stage—crucial for understanding relapse—has been less explored.
  • Different substances show varying patterns of brain activity related to negative emotional processing, with regions like the amygdala, insula, anterior cingulate, and medial prefrontal cortex being implicated in substance dependence.
  • Alcohol dependence tends to show blunted reactions to negative stimuli, cocaine dependence exhibits heightened responses, and opioid and cannabis dependence show distinct involvement of specific brain areas, indicating that emotional dysregulation in addiction is substance-specific.

Background: Wash-off of plant protection products from crops is represented in current European Union (EU) surface water models and future EU soil models by a coefficient that estimates its contribution to soil loadings following rainfall. Replacing the default coefficient with experimental data requires a harmonized protocol and this research forms part of the development of such a protocol. Following a successful test of the proposed protocol on a single crop across eight laboratories, a range of crops were tested in a single laboratory to assess the impact of crop type on the results.

In this study, we investigated the potential involvement of endogenous viral elements (EVEs) in the development of apical tissue necrosis, resulting in the terminal abortion of upland cotton ( L.) in Georgia. The high-throughput sequence analysis of symptomatic and asymptomatic plant tissue samples revealed near-complete EVE-Georgia (EVE-GA) sequences closely related to caulimoviruses.

Dementia is a debilitating condition with a disproportionate impact on women. While sex differences in longevity contribute to the disparity, the role of the female sex as a biological variable in disease progression is not yet fully elucidated. Metabolic dysfunctions are drivers of dementia etiology, and cardiometabolic diseases are among the most influential modifiable risk factors.
