Complex bacterial flora of imported pet tortoises deceased during quarantine: Another zoonotic threat?

Turtoises are a great puzzle when it comes to their bacterial flora, the composition and structure of which are still unknown in details. Its component which has been best described so far is Salmonella spp., presumably due to the threat of reptile-associated salmonellosis in humans.

Relation to enterocins and herbal extracts of fecal hemolytic Escherichia coli from domestic ducks detected with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

Surveillance studies have generally reported an increase in Escherichia coli strains resistant to major classes of antibiotics used for animals' treatment. The aim of this study was to test the susceptibility of 25 strains (isolated from 30 domestic Mallard ducks-Anas platyrhynchos, both sex, aged 8 to 14 wk, taxonomically alloted to the species E. coli using MALDI TOF mass spectrometry system) to antimicrobials (antibiotics, enterocins, and herbal extracts).

Evaluation of enterococci for potential probiotic utilization in dogs.

Some strains of the genus Enterococcus are effective probiotic bacteria if they meet safety and probiotic criteria. In our study, 17 canine enterococci previously selected from a group of 160 isolates based on safety criteria were screened for some functional properties relevant to their use as probiotics. The results of antimicrobial resistance testing showed sensitivity of eleven strains to EFSA recommended antimicrobials.
