Manipulation of mechanical motion at the micro-scale has been attracting continuous attention, leading to the successful implementation of various strategies with potential impact on classical and quantum information processing. We propose an approach based on the interplay between a pair of localised mechanical resonators and travelling surface acoustic waves (SAW). We demonstrate the existence of a two-sided interaction, allowing the use of SAW to trigger and control the resonator oscillation, and to manipulate the elastic energy distribution on the substrate through resonator coupling.

The uncertainty in the estimation of diffusion model parameters in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be reduced by optimally selecting the diffusion gradient directions utilizing some prior structural information. This is beneficial for spinal cord DTI, where the magnetic resonance images have low signal-to-noise ratio and thus high uncertainty in diffusion model parameter estimation. Presented is a gradient optimization scheme based on D-optimality, which reduces the overall estimation uncertainty by minimizing the Rician Cramer-Rao lower bound of the variance of the model parameter estimates.

Recent advances in computational modeling of vascular adaptations and the need for their extension to patient-specific modeling have introduced new challenges to the path toward abdominal aortic aneurysm modeling. First, the fundamental assumption in adaptation models, namely the existence of vascular homeostasis in normal vessels, is not easy to implement in a vessel model built from medical images. Second, subjecting the vessel wall model to the normal pressure often makes the configuration deviate from the original geometry obtained from medical images.

Advances in modeling vascular tissue growth and remodeling (G&R) as well as medical imaging usher in a great potential for integrative computational mechanics to revolutionize the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. A computational model of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) enlargement has been previously developed based on realistic geometric models. In this work, we couple the computational simulation of AAA growth with the hemodynamics simulation in a stepwise, iterative manner and study the interrelation between the changes in wall shear stress (WSS) and arterial wall evolution.

Skin microcirculation plays an important role in several diseases including chronic venous insufficiency and diabetes. Magnetic resonance (MR) has the potential to provide quantitative information and a better penetration depth compared with other non-invasive methods such as laser Doppler flowmetry or optical coherence tomography. The continuous progress in hardware resulting in higher sensitivity must be coupled with advances in data acquisition schemes.
